My husband died in a February. In the spring, the phone company reclaimed his number despite my asking; by summer it belonged to some stranger — I know because I texted it once, late and stupid, and got back a polite 'sorry wrong person.'

In October, on what would have been our anniversary, my phone rang once — a single truncated ring — while it sat on the table in front of me. Screen lit: his name. His photo. The contact I had never deleted. By the time my hand worked, nothing. But the voicemail icon appeared.

Eleven seconds. I have listened to it several hundred times and had it analysed twice. It is our old kitchen — I can prove that sentence, which sounds unprovable: the specific triple-click of the gas igniter that never worked on the first press, the radio jingle of a station whose jingle CHANGED the year after he died, the fridge door with its dying seal-wheeze we always meant to fix. A soundscape of a room as it existed in a specific year, recorded by nothing, sent from a number that belonged to a stranger who, when I gathered myself and called, was on a hiking holiday with his phone in airplane mode and his own carrier log showing no outgoing anything.

THIS EXCERPT ENDS HERE. The remaining 105 words of the testimony — and the reader jury — are on file at:
