Three Strangers Waiting in the Dark

It started with a work trip to a dying small town where everything closed early and the motel looked like it belonged to another decade. The clerk gave the guest his key, then warned him not to open the door at night unless it was her or the owner. She said it like routine advice, which somehow made it worse.

That night, someone paced outside his room. The footsteps stopped at his door again and again. Later came the knocks, but when he looked through the peephole, no one was there. They found pry marks, a removed screen, and later, a scrap of paper hidden under the bed with his room number and vehicle plate written on it.

Another story began with a harmless online conversation. The man quickly became possessive and threatening, even though they had never dated. After disappearing, he returned weeks later, acting as if they belonged together. She never gave him her address, yet one night he was waiting near her home.
