We Bricked Up a Door and It Screams

The doorway made no sense, which is why we sealed it. Our Victorian terrace had, in the back bedroom, a door in the middle of a wall that opened onto nothing — bare brick a foot behind it, the ghost of some long-ago room reconfiguration. The surveyor called it a 'blind doorway,' a relic. We were renovating; a door to a foot of brick is useless and draughty. We bricked the opening flush and skimmed it smooth and thought no more of it. For about nine hours.

The knocking started that first night. From the wall. From, specifically and unmistakably, the sealed cavity — that foot-deep pocket of dead air between the old door's position and the original brick, now entombed behind our new work. Three knocks, patient, spaced. Then silence. Then, later, three more. It has knocked every night since, and we are eight months in.

I did the rational things first, and I want the skeptics to know I did them thoroughly: pipes (there are none in that wall — confirmed, opened up, checked, resealed), the water hammer theory (no plumbing event correlates), animals (a cavity that size sealed on all six faces cannot host and feed a living animal for eight months, and there's no smell of a dead one, and it's been eight months). Trapped air, settling, temperature — none of it knocks in threes, with spacing, with what I can only call intent.
