Banshee

The banshee is Ireland's death herald: a wailing woman heard — rarely seen — before a death in certain families. The keening tradition of funeral criers gave the legend its sound; the old accounts are startlingly administrative, listing which surnames she follows. Modern reports are rarer and stripped of costume: a night cry with no source, wrong in ways dogs agree about, and a phone call before morning. Juries here reach for foxes and grief.
