Chupacabra
The chupacabra — goat-sucker — was born in 1990s Puerto Rico: livestock found drained, with puncture wounds, and a spined, gray attacker glimpsed at night. The mainland version mutated into a hairless coyote-like animal, and indeed many carcasses turned out to be canids with severe mange. But the older reports, the ones with reptilian detail and impossible leaps, never got a tidy explanation. Farm-country accounts arrive here every year: dead animals, no blood, no tracks, and a dog that would not leave the porch for a week.
