Jersey Devil

The Jersey Devil is the Pine Barrens' resident monster: a hooved, bat-winged creature folklore says was the cursed thirteenth child of Mother Leeds, born in 1735. The great sighting wave of January 1909 put footprints on rooftops across South Jersey and closed schools. Modern accounts are sparser and stranger — a scream over the pines that silences everything, hoofprints that stop mid-field. Skeptics offer sandhill cranes and hoaxes; drivers on Route 72 at 2 a.m. offer their own testimony, and the jury here reads both.
