Phantom Smells
A phantom smell is an odour with no source — pipe tobacco in a smoke-free house, a grandmother's perfume in a sealed car, roses in a January stairwell. Medicine calls the neurological version phantosmia and takes it seriously; folklore calls it a visitation and takes it personally. The grief-adjacent reports are the most common in this archive: the smell arriving on an anniversary, in one room, for one minute, strong enough that two people name it independently. That independent second nose is usually what decides the vote.
