Vanishing Hitchhiker

The vanishing hitchhiker is road folklore's crown jewel: a passenger picked up at night who gives an address and is gone from the seat before arrival — often leaving a borrowed sweater on a grave. Folklorists have traced versions back to horse-drawn eras; it is the most studied urban legend in the literature. And yet drivers keep filing first-person versions with dashcams and dome lights and specific mile markers. The legend explains the SHAPE of their story, the jury notes. It does not explain their passenger seat still being warm.
