Wendigo

The wendigo comes from Algonquian-speaking peoples' traditions: a gaunt, insatiable spirit associated with winter, famine and the taboo of cannibalism. In modern telling it has become a tall, antlered forest horror that mimics voices — a description the original stories largely do not contain. Accounts filed under this name here usually involve deep-woods camps: a voice calling a name at dawn, tree-line movement that paced the witness for miles.
