Oumuamua broke expectations from the start. Most researchers were unconvinced. Later papers proposed natural explanations that need no engineers: outgassing of hydrogen or nitrogen ice that would be nearly invisible to our instruments, or a fragment of a nitrogen-ice world, a cosmic shard of something like Pluto's surface. These ideas fit the physics without invoking a civilization. The honest summary is that the acceleration is real and its cause is still debated, with natural explanations leading and none yet nailed down beyond argument.

Where the tidy story frays

Science does not like unrepeatable observations, and Oumuamua is the ultimate one-shot. We cannot re-measure it, cannot resolve it, cannot check any hypothesis against a better look. In 2019 a second interstellar object, comet 2I/Borisov, arrived looking entirely ordinary, which suggests the first one was a genuine oddball rather than a preview of a fleet.
