Black Dog (Hellhound)

The black dog is Britain's roadside omen: a huge dark hound with glowing eyes — Black Shuck, Padfoot, the Barghest — met on lanes, crossroads and church paths, traditionally foretelling death. Sightings run from a 1577 church attack recorded in print to modern motorway accounts. Big dogs at night explain much; the folklore's odd details (silence, size shifting, vanishing mid-field) explain the rest of the reports or nothing at all. Filed accounts here are usually drivers' stories: the dog in the headlights that cast no eye-shine and left no dog.
