Bloody Mary
Bloody Mary is the sleepover ritual: chant the name into a dark mirror the prescribed number of times and she appears. Folklorists trace it through divination games where girls sought future husbands in mirrors; the strange-face illusion supplies the mechanism — dim mirrors deform faces on schedule. Which is to say the ritual WORKS, just not supernaturally. The childhood accounts filed here are less about Mary than about the one time it went off-script: the bathroom door that would not open, the third reflection, the friend who never played again.
