Ghost Lights (Will-o'-the-Wisp)

Ghost lights — will-o'-the-wisps, spook lights, the Marfa and Brown Mountain lights — are unexplained luminous orbs seen over marshes, valleys and rail grades. Candidate physics is generous: marsh gas, distant headlights refracted by temperature inversions, piezoelectric effects. Some famous lights were solved exactly so; others predate the highways blamed for them. Filed accounts here favour the interactive minority: lights that approach when called, retreat when chased, and blink out the instant a camera finally focuses.
