La Llorona

La Llorona — the weeping woman — is Latin American folklore's river ghost: a mother who drowned her children and now walks waterways crying for them, dangerous to children out after dark. The legend is centuries old, argued to reach back to colonial and Aztec-era motifs. It functions as a cautionary tale, which skeptics consider the whole story. The accounts filed here come from riverbanks and irrigation canals: the crying that moves against the wind, and grandmothers who never treated the rule about children and rivers as folklore at all.
