Night Terrors

A night terror is not a nightmare: the sleeper — usually a child — bolts upright screaming, eyes open, inconsolable, and remembers nothing in the morning. It happens in deep non-REM sleep, runs in families, and is medically benign, which is easy to say and hard to feel at 2 a.m. The babysitting and parenting stories filed here begin as textbook cases and earn their place with the extra detail: the child screaming AT something, tracking it across the room, or answering — mid-terror — a question nobody in the house had asked aloud.
