Pendulum Dowsing

Pendulum dowsing is divination by swing: a weight on a thread answers yes or no, finds lost objects, picks dates. Like its field cousin — water dowsing with rods — it runs on the ideomotor effect, and controlled tests have been unkind for a century. It stays in the glossary because it stays in the stories: the pendulum session that located the lost dog two counties away, the grandmother who picked all four grandchildren's birth dates. Chance and selective memory are strong explanations. The families keep the maps anyway.
