A psychomanteum is a mirror-gazing chamber — dim light, a slightly angled mirror reflecting darkness — revived by psychologist Raymond Moody from ancient Greek oracle practice as a way to facilitate encounters with the departed. Perception research explains the reliable part: the strange-face illusion warps reflections within minutes of gazing. Participants' reports go further, describing conversations and presences beside the mirror rather than in it. Accounts filed here are grief journeys mostly, and the juries read them that way.
