Seance
A seance is a deliberate attempt to contact the dead — a circle, a medium, questions asked into candlelight. The Victorian heyday produced both the entire profession of stage mediums and the entire profession of debunking them; Houdini spent his last years on the second. Modern accounts here are smaller and more domestic: three friends, a recorder, one question that got answered by the hallway light. The believed stories are rarely dramatic. It is the specific, checkable detail — a nickname, a date — that moves a jury.
