Stone Tape Theory

The stone tape theory proposes that buildings record intense events into their fabric — stone, brick, timber — and replay them under the right conditions, producing residual hauntings. The name comes from a 1972 BBC play, and no recording mechanism has ever been demonstrated; as science it is a metaphor wearing a lab coat. As a description of testimony, though, it fits uncannily: the same scene, the same hour, indifferent to the living.
