From a plane window over the Palk Strait, the water gives it away. A pale, dotted line curves across the shallow sea between the southeastern tip of India and the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka, too straight and too continuous to ignore, a broken causeway that looks for all the world like something laid down on purpose and then half-drowned. People have been staring at that line and reaching the same conclusion for a very long time.
The feature is called Adam's Bridge in some traditions and Rama Setu, Rama's bridge, in others. The Ramayana's bridge

The epic Ramayana tells how the god Rama, to rescue his abducted wife Sita from the demon king Ravana in Lanka, had a bridge built across the sea by his army of vanaras, monkey-like beings, who carried and floated stones into place, some versions saying the rocks bore Rama's name and so did not sink. To millions of believers the shoals are the physical remnant of that bridge, a sacred site rather than a geological curiosity. That is faith and scripture, and it deserves to be described as such rather than confirmed or dismissed by a rock survey.
What science and satellites actually show
The modern controversy flared when NASA satellite photographs of the shoals circulated online, presented in some quarters as proof of a man-made structure of great antiquity. NASA itself pushed back, noting that its images could reveal a formation but could say nothing about how it formed or who, if anyone, made it. Geologists read the chain as a natural product of sediment, coral, and shifting sea levels: sandbanks and reef material accumulated along a shallow ridge, shaped over thousands of years by currents and the rise and fall of the ocean. Records and tradition suggest parts of the causeway were passable on foot until a cyclone in 1480 deepened the channel.
The straightness that impresses everyone overhead is, again, partly a trick of perception. The human eye seizes on a line and reads intention into it, and a ridge of natural shoals in a narrow strait reads as engineering. The plan to dredge a shipping channel through the area, the Sethusamudram project, turned the geology into a live political and religious fight, which is not the same as settling the science.
Where the tidy account frays is in the dating and the human history layered on top. Studies have suggested the shoals sit on an old ridge with the sediment above it comparatively younger, and questions about exactly when the causeway was walkable, and how that squares with regional oral tradition, are not fully closed. Natural origin does not erase the fact that people really did once cross here, and remembered it.
