We Booked the Same Remote Cabin Ten Years Apart

Swear It Happened — CASE FILE #258

For our tenth anniversary, we decided to do a proper getaway. My wife spent an evening scrolling through hundreds of rental listings across the whole region, on a big modern site that did not exist ten years ago, filtering by nothing in particular. She stopped on one and said, look at this one, I love it, and showed me the photos. I loved it too. We booked it that night, on a feeling, without recognizing anything.
We drove out for the weekend, up an unmarked road, and as the trees opened I felt my wife's hand grab my arm. We both knew before we spoke. It was the cabin. Our cabin. The one from the honeymoon we had lost. New name, new owner, new listing, freshly renovated inside, but the same walls, the same view, the same crooked porch we had sat on as newlyweds.
Out of hundreds of listings, across an entire region, ten years apart, with no memory of the location and no connection between the old owner and the new, we had chosen the exact same cabin for our anniversary that we chose for our honeymoon. The odds are absurd. We did not care about the odds. We sat on that same crooked porch and cried a little, and toasted ten years, in the one place we had thought we lost.
