Ringing in the Ears: Message From Beyond or Just Tinnitus?

It arrives without warning: a clear, high-pitched tone, usually in one ear, holding for a few seconds before fading into nothing. And instantly the interpretations queue up. Western folklore's oldest version — "someone is talking about you" — even specifies the ear (right = praise, left = slander, in the common telling). Spiritual traditions read the high ring as a message, a "download," a guide trying to reach you, or a shift in energy; numerologists pair it with whatever you were thinking the instant it struck. What your ear is doing

The clinical name is transient spontaneous tinnitus, and — crucially — it is nearly universal and benign: brief ringing in a silent room happens to almost everyone, likely a spontaneous misfire of the hair cells or auditory nerve, sometimes nudged by a tiny blood-vessel or muscle event near the ear. CONSTANT ringing is a different matter and a real one — chronic tinnitus follows noise damage, aging, earwax, medications or ear disease and deserves a doctor — but the sudden-tone-then-gone experience is your auditory system briefly hearing itself, no sender required. The specific-ear folklore is unfalsifiable by design (you cannot check who was talking) and thrives on it.
