The rental's guestbook was full of chatty entries from past visitors. On the last used page, in the host's handwriting, dated before our arrival, was a detailed paragraph about my partner and me — our jobs, our route, our habits — signed 'looking forward to hosting you.'
The dog was cute, the job sounded real, and he texted every day. Then I spotted a spreadsheet in the background of a photo, with my misspelled name in a grid of women. I was just a row.
Every morning at 7:40 an elderly man photographed our house with a film camera — and when we finally asked why, his answer emptied the street under our feet.
The night auditor gave me 412. My key worked. The room was dark — and someone was asleep in the bed. The auditor swore 412 had been empty for a week. The name in the system was mine, checked in an hour before I arrived.
He was one push-up away from walking out of basic training forever. Then a platoon of exhausted strangers did something no drill sergeant ordered them to do. Years later, he pulled me out of a fire. Funny how that works.
A hemorrhage after my daughter was born nearly took me. I rose to the ceiling and watched them fight for me, then a tunnel of light offered peace -- but I could not leave her behind.
My father's old bedside radio only came on during the attacks, hissing static in a dark room, while I lay frozen listening for the voice I was sure was hidden inside it.
A gut feeling had kept me home from work. Then the sparrows came at the glass, a dozen of them, throwing themselves at the pane over and over. Then the phone rang about my son.
The old textile mill has had no power for forty years. So none of us could explain why, deep in the basement, one of the great dyeing drums was slowly turning, or why the water in it was still warm.
He got on at my stop, dressed like me, same bag, same coffee order in the same cup — and every day for a week he corrected one more detail, closing in on being me.
'The one locked door is just my storage, ignore it.' We did — until the third night, when light came from under it, and a floorboard creaked inside a room we'd been told was full of boxes and empty of people.
I worked a furniture chain's returns hotline, and one gray afternoon a man called and calmly said he needed to return his wife. It was not the call I was trained for.
Dale sat with us every Friday for a year. Friendly, funny, part of the team. Then we realized none of us had ever seen him Monday through Thursday, and it got very strange.
A stranger at the trailhead — dry in the rain, oddly formal — told us the cliff path 'wasn't taking guests tonight.' We laughed, obeyed anyway, and heard the reason by morning.
Our host was lovely and off-site. Her 'sister,' she mentioned casually, 'might pop by the garden.' The sister popped by every day, at the same time, and stood at the same window, and was not, we learned, a sister.
A wave of grief hit me in a grocery aisle and I could not stop crying. It was not my sorrow. It belonged to my twin, mourning a dog I had never met, at that exact hour.
Our barn cat had never once come inside the house. The afternoon the sky turned green, she scratched at the door like she was possessed, and led us straight to the cellar.
I brought my own hidden camera to the rental — I always do now. It didn't catch a ghost. It caught the host letting himself in every afternoon while we were out, and doing something to the coffee.
For six nights a man stood in our yard between 3:00 and 3:20, smiling at the house — every camera we aimed at that spot recorded grass, birch, and nobody.
My manager fired me by text at 5 p.m. Friday to avoid a conversation. He did not realize I was the only person who knew how to run the payroll system. Monday morning was educational.
