I Gave Away My Seat Because of a Dream

I fly monthly for work and I have never been a nervous passenger. That is the context for how out of character all of this was.

Three nights before a routine hop, I dreamed I was in seat 14C — I could see the row number on the bulkhead plaque — when the cabin dropped, the overhead bins burst, and a case with a red ribbon on its handle came down on the man beside me. No crash, no fire. Just that drop, the bins, the ribbon, and a flight attendant saying 'remain seated' in a voice with cracks in it. I woke with my hands gripping phantom armrests.

The dream repeated the next two nights, identical, which has never happened to me before or since. Same plaque, same ribbon, same cracked voice.

At online check-in my assigned seat was 14C. I sat looking at the screen for a long time. I am an engineer; I do not rearrange my life around sleep. But at the gate I asked to move, invented a knee problem, and got 22A. Boarding, I passed row 14 and there it was in the bin above: a grey case, red ribbon on the handle. I looked at it the way you look at a word you have only ever seen in your own handwriting.

The flight hit clear-air turbulence forty minutes in. Sudden drop, bins open along the forward rows, three minor injuries — one of them the man in 14D, struck by falling luggage. It made the regional news, which is how my wife learned about it before I landed.

I know the sceptical arithmetic: frequent flyer, common seat, turbulence is routine, ribbons exist. I have run that arithmetic a hundred times. It never quite covers the plaque, the ribbon, and three identical nights — and it did not cover it then, at the gate, when something in me simply refused.
