Swear It Happened — CASE FILE #356
84% BELIEVED
At 14:06 my phone rang and it was him, and I answered, and there was a rustle and then a room, and then his voice, close, saying: "...sorry, yeah, sorry, I've got it—"
He had put his phone in his pocket. He had, at some point, sat on his own contacts.
I said "Ollie?" about nine times, like an idiot, into a phone, in a supermarket, in the frozen aisle.
Then somebody said, "We are gathered here today."
And I stopped talking.
I stood in the frozen aisle of a supermarket four hundred miles away and I listened to my best friend of twenty-two years get married. I heard her laugh at the bit where he stumbled on her middle name, which he has never been able to say. I heard his voice go — and it did go, it broke, twice, and he told me later that it did not, and he is a liar.
I heard the room when they kissed. It is a very particular noise, a wedding room. There is no other noise like it.
A woman stocking peas asked me if I was all right, and I said, "My friend is getting married," and she said, "In there?" and I said yes.
She stood next to me for about a minute. She did not say anything. We just stood there, two strangers by the peas, listening to a wedding on a phone.
The call ended at nine minutes and eleven seconds, when he took his jacket off.
I never told him during the reception. I texted him at midnight: "You did well. Her middle name is not that hard."
He rang me immediately. He was very drunk and very loud and he said, "WERE YOU THERE?"
And I said: "Frozen aisle. Whole thing."
He cried. He tells this story at parties now, badly, and he always gets one detail wrong — he says it was the bread aisle — and I have never corrected him and I never will.
