Vardoger

The vardoger is Norwegian folklore's forerunner: the sound of you arriving before you arrive. Footsteps on the porch, keys, the door — and nobody there; twenty minutes later the real you repeats the sequence exactly. Families that report it usually report it for years, matter-of-factly, the dog reacting on both passes. Explanations range from expectation-primed hearing to nothing anyone can defend with a straight face. It earns its entry because the accounts are so specific, so boring in texture, and so completely resistant to embarrassment.
