Electronics Turning On by Themselves: Who's on the Remote?

A television switching itself on in a dark room is pure theatre — the click, the blue wash on the wall, the sudden cheerful stranger selling insurance to your empty sofa. Smart speakers upgraded the show: now the empty room gets answers, music on request nobody made, a laugh (one assistant famously did this at scale until its maker patched it). Half the haunted-tech mail we receive begins after midnight with a device doing exactly what devices do best: acting briefly, uncannily, alive.

The gremlins with part numbers

Modern electronics never truly sleep; standby is a listening state, and listeners get pranked. HDMI-CEC lets any device on the chain wake the TV — a console updating at 2 a.m. is the classic villain. Scheduled updates, "wake on LAN", timers set by a previous owner, stuck or dying remote batteries firing random codes, a neighbour's remote on the same frequency through thin walls, voltage sags flipping standby states, and voice assistants mishearing the furnace as their wake word — each has confessed in our comment sections. The debug ritual: unplug (not standby) the suspect for a week; disable CEC; pull remote batteries; check schedules. Nine cases in ten die right there, which is its own small grief.

The tenth is why the category exists. Devices that start ONLY during other activity in the house, and stop when it stops. The TV that wakes to static at the hour someone died, twice, witnessed. The unplugged radio — genuinely unplugged, photographed — with sound in it. Electrical folklore has always held that whatever-it-is finds wires congenial; our files neither bless nor mock that, they just keep the receipts. Run the debug ritual first. Then bring us what survived it.
