Firewalking is genuinely old and genuinely widespread. The Sawau clans of Beqa Island in Fiji have walked heated stones for centuries as an inherited privilege. The Anastenaria communities of northern Greece dance across embers each May carrying icons of Saints Constantine and Helen, a tradition they trace to villages in Thrace. In San Pedro Manrique, Spain, villagers cross a bed of oak coals every June on the eve of San Juan, often carrying another person on their back. None of these people think of physics while they do it. All of them benefit from physics anyway.
What the coals are actually doing
The central fact is that temperature and heat transfer are different things. A bed of wood embers can sit at several hundred degrees Celsius, but wood charcoal is a poor conductor of heat, and the fluffy layer of ash coating the coals is a worse one. Skin touching an ember for a fraction of a second simply does not receive much energy, the same way you can briefly touch a cake in a hot oven while the metal pan next to it would brand you. Add a brisk walking pace, with each foot in contact for well under a second per step and only a handful of steps in total, and the arithmetic mostly comes out in your favor.
Physicists have been making this point with their own feet for decades. Bernard Leikind, a plasma physicist, walked coals in the 1980s specifically to show that no special mental state was required, and physics educators like David Willey and Jearl Walker have repeated the demonstration many times. Sweat can help slightly, but the once-popular idea that a vapor layer protects the sole, the Leidenfrost effect, turns out to matter far less than conduction. The coals are the trick. The mindset is the theater.
When it goes wrong
The failure cases are just as instructive. People burn when the bed is too long, when they stop or walk slowly, when metal debris or embedded stones conduct heat into the foot, or when the coals have not burned down to an ash-covered state. Motivational seminars have learned this the hard way: at large self-help events in San Jose in 2012 and Dallas in 2016, news outlets reported that dozens of participants needed treatment for burns after mass walks. Nobody's beliefs failed that night. Their contact time did.
That said, the ritual walkers earn a moment of respect. The Anastenaria dance on the embers rather than marching briskly across, and the Beqa walkers stand on stones heated for hours. Researchers who have studied these events, including a 2011 field study of the San Pedro Manrique walk that measured synchronized heart rates between walkers and spectators, found something real happening socially and physiologically, even if it is not fireproofing. Confidence will not change your skin's thermal properties, but hesitation, freezing mid-bed, absolutely changes your contact time. In that narrow sense, the guru is not entirely wrong.
The residue
Physics closes the case for the seminar circuit. It says less about the accounts from Fiji and Greece of long walks, slow crossings, and soles that come away unmarked after contact that looks, on the footage, uncomfortably leisurely. Skeptical investigators generally find ordinary explanations when they measure such events. Not every event has been measured.
