The lock clicked, I pushed the door open, and I stopped on the threshold with the strongest sense of homecoming I have ever felt in a strange place. I knew this room. Before I looked up I knew there would be a water stain on the ceiling above the bed, shaped like a bird in flight, and there was. I knew the top drawer of the dresser would stick and need a lift-and-pull to open, and it did, exactly. I knew that when I crossed to the window and drew the curtain, there would be a brick wall close on the left and a slice of a park on the right, and there was.
I have thought about this a great deal and the only explanation I can half-believe is that I dreamed this room, years ago, a dream I did not remember until I was standing inside it. Because the recognition was not the shape of a guess. It was memory. I knew the room the way you know a room you lived in as a child.
I spent three nights in 419 with a low, constant hum of familiarity, catching myself reaching for a light switch in the dark and finding it exactly where my hand expected. On the last morning I stood in the doorway and looked back at the water-stain bird on the ceiling and felt, absurdly, like I was leaving somewhere I had lived.
I have no memory of the dream. I only have the room, and the certainty that I had been in it before I ever arrived.
