Are Psychics Real? The Reading, Deconstructed
205 cases of this type on file · the jury believed 84% of them · 28952 verdicts cast
The experience is disarming in person: a stranger, minutes in, is telling you about your father's death, the box of photographs you keep meaning to sort, the name that starts with M. People leave readings shaken, and the polls say a hefty share of the public believes — so the honest page starts with the machine that produces that experience without any gift at all.
The technique, so you can watch for it
Cold reading is a learnable craft (see the glossary entry): high-probability statements ("you keep something of his but never look at it"), shotgunning names and letters, reading your micro-reactions to steer, vagueness that YOU sharpen ("that's my uncle!" — the sitter does the psychic's work), and the memory harvest afterward, where hits are kept and the forty misses evaporate. "Hot reading" is cruder: research — obituaries, social media, staff eavesdropping; more than one celebrated medium has been caught with an earpiece or a pre-show questionnaire. Formal tests are the graveyard: under controls that block feedback and research, performance collapses to chance — the James Randi Foundation's million-dollar prize for demonstrated ability expired unclaimed after half a century, a fact that should end the conversation and never does.
Because the conversation has a second half: police files with tips too specific to shrug off (most "psychic detective" claims dissolve on checking — a few resist); the small experimental anomalies (ganzfeld debates) that statistics faculties still argue; and our own readers' cases — the walk-in reading that named the unlisted, unGoogleable detail, witnessed. The craft explains the industry. The industry's existence doesn't settle every reading. Bring yours with the misses INCLUDED — that's the whole test.

Questions people ask
How do psychics know things about you?
Mostly cold reading (probabilistic statements + your feedback + selective memory) and sometimes hot reading (prior research). Both produce astonishing-feeling sessions reliably.
Has any psychic passed a scientific test?
No one has demonstrated ability under properly controlled conditions; the famous million-dollar challenge went unclaimed for decades.
Can a reading still be worth reporting?
If you logged it: specifics stated unprompted, no research surface (unlisted details), witnesses, and the full transcript including misses. That's rare — which is why such cases get argued here.
