A Ladybug Lands on You: Count the Spots, Make a Wish

Almost alone among insects, the ladybug is welcomed. When one lands on you, tradition across Europe and beyond says GOOD luck has arrived — and offers a menu of specifics: don't brush it off (that shoos the luck away); count its spots to know the number of happy months, or dollars, or the years until you marry; if it flies off, note the direction it takes your luck. The affection has a devotional root: the name "ladybird" / "ladybug" honors the Virgin Mary ("Our Lady's bird"), whose red cloak the beetle's shell recalled; medieval farmers, watching ladybugs devour the aphids destroying their crops, prayed to Mary and credited her messengers when the pests vanished. A lucky bug, in other words, that earned its luck by saving the harvest.

Why it chose your hand

The biology is fond. Ladybugs are voracious aphid-hunters (a real agricultural ally, which is the origin of the goodwill), and they land, walk and bask on warm surfaces — a still, warm hand in a garden is prime real estate; the "it picked ME" feeling is the same warm-perch attraction behind butterflies and dragonflies landing. In autumn they cluster indoors to overwinter, so the "ladybug in the house" that many read as a blessing is simply a beetle seeking shelter. Attention curates as always: the ladybug that landed during a good moment is kept and counted; the dozens that came and went are forgotten.
