A missile, a legend, and a name

The Zone of Silence, the Zona del Silencio, is a patch of the Mapimi desert where the states of Durango, Chihuahua and Coahuila meet, deep in an arid basin called the Bolson de Mapimi. What testing actually finds

Held up to instruments, the marquee claims dissolve. Journalists and scientists who have driven into the zone with radios have generally found them working perfectly well; there is no documented, reproducible magnetic anomaly that kills electronics across the area. The famous meteorite abundance has a flat, boring cause: the Bolson de Mapimi is open, pale desert with little vegetation, so dark meteorites are simply easier to spot and collect there than in a forest, not more numerous.

The "strange" flora and fauna are largely the ordinary endemic life of a biosphere reserve — Mapimi is protected precisely because its desert ecology is distinctive — reframed as sinister once the legend gave people a reason to look twice.

The residue in the basin

The tidy version is convincing, and most of the Zone of Silence is a marketing triumph draped over a normal desert and one Cold War accident. It even inherited the numerology, with promoters claiming it sits at a latitude that lines it up with the Bermuda Triangle and the Egyptian pyramids, which is the sort of pattern the human mind manufactures for free.

What lingers is smaller and older than the missile. Local ranchers spoke of radio trouble and odd lights before 1970 — the aviator Francisco Sarabia reportedly complained of interference over the area back in the 1930s — and the people who actually live in the Bolson have their own quiet catalogue of nights that did not behave.
