Fugue State

A fugue state is psychiatry's real vanishing act: a person travels, sometimes for days, functioning outwardly, with no later memory of the journey — occasionally starting a new identity elsewhere. It is rare, linked to severe stress, and it is the sober explanation offered whenever someone reports waking three towns away. The accounts filed here sit in the uncomfortable gap: gaps too short for classic fugue, no stress history, a car with less mileage than the distance requires. The jury reads both the diagnosis and the odometer.
