It is two in the morning on a black swamp road, your tyre is flat, and the tree line has just moved — not an animal you can name, but something upright and tall, looking at you with two red points where its eyes should be.

The night on Scape Ore Swamp

The Lizard Man was born on 29 June 1988, when a seventeen-year-old named Christopher Davis told police he had been changing a flat tyre on a lonely road near Scape Ore Swamp, outside Bishopville in Lee County, South Carolina, when a creature came out of the dark. He described it as around seven feet tall, green and scaly, with glowing red eyes and three-fingered hands, and said it ran at his car, climbed onto the roof and clung on as he sped away. He brought back a wing mirror twisted at an angle and scratches on the vehicle to show for it.

Lee County Sheriff Liston Truesdale took enough reports to open a file. Other residents came forward with sightings, and with cars that had been mysteriously chewed and scratched, and a local radio station offered a reward for the creature's capture. For one hot summer a farming county became the reptilian capital of America.

What the county actually had

Strip away the headlines and the physical evidence is thin and ambiguous. Scratched cars and bite marks are consistent with a bear, which stands and claws and is more than capable of mangling bodywork; misidentification at two in the morning, adrenaline high and a tyre iron in hand, does the rest. No body, no clear track, no photograph from 1988 ever established anything reptilian.

Davis, for his part, stuck to his account for the rest of his life and reportedly passed a polygraph, which tells you he believed what he saw more than it tells you what was there. Cryptozoologists filed the Lizard Man alongside other bipedal swamp cryptids and moved on; Bishopville, sensibly, printed T-shirts.

The part that keeps the file open

Sober explanation handles the mangled cars and the panic well. It handles less comfortably the fact that the sightings did not simply stop. Reports trickled in over the following decades, and in 2015 a churchgoer near Bishopville produced a blurry photograph of something dark and upright crossing a field, timed with an eerie neatness to the anniversary season. Blurry photographs prove nothing, which is exactly why they never close a case.

None of it requires a lizard from the swamp. But a specific teenager, on a specific night, with a specific damaged car and a story he never took back, is the kind of small, stubborn fact that folklore grows around and does not let go.

Below, readers have filed their own back-road encounters and roadside frights, and voted them True, Fake or Not sure. Weigh the bear against the red eyes and give your verdict.

Questions people ask

What is the Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp?

It is a cryptid reported near Bishopville, South Carolina, described as a seven-foot, green, scaly creature with red eyes and three-fingered hands. The legend began with a 1988 sighting by teenager Christopher Davis.

What happened in the 1988 Lizard Man sighting?

Christopher Davis said that while changing a tire near Scape Ore Swamp at night, a tall reptilian creature attacked his car, climbing onto the roof as he drove off. He returned with a damaged mirror and scratches, and the story triggered a wave of local reports.

Is the Lizard Man real?

There is no physical proof. The scratched cars and bite marks attributed to it are consistent with a bear, and skeptics consider the sightings misidentifications or hoaxes, though several witnesses, including Davis, insisted they were sincere.

Have there been recent Lizard Man sightings?

Yes. Reports continued after 1988, and in 2015 a resident near Bishopville photographed a dark upright figure said to be the creature. The images are too blurry to confirm anything, and the town now embraces the legend as a local attraction.
