A Moth in the House: Messenger, Omen, or Just the Porch Light?

Something about a large moth indoors unsettles people more than its harmlessness warrants — and folklore agrees it means something. Across many cultures a moth in the house, especially a big dark one, is a death omen or a visiting soul: in parts of Mexico and the Caribbean the black witch moth (mariposa de la muerte) entering a home foretells a death; Celtic and Appalachian lore reads moths as souls of the dead; elsewhere a white moth is a departed loved one, a moth landing on you a message. The night-timing helps — moths arrive in the dark, at windows and lamps, exactly when the house is quiet and a mind is prone to meaning.

Why the moth is at your window

The biology is a single word: phototaxis. Moths navigate by distant light (the moon) and are hijacked by artificial light, spiraling toward porch lamps and lit windows and blundering indoors through any gap — which is why they turn up on the very nights you've left a light on late, i.e. the anxious, sleepless, news-heavy nights. Big showy species (the black witch, luna moths, hawk moths) are simply the memorable ones; the hundred small moths that came and went unremarked don't get filed. Their stillness on a wall by day (moths rest, cryptic and motionless) reads as watchful presence. Nothing supernatural is required to explain a moth at a lit window at 2 a.m.
