It is the third night of the gale and the yardarm above you has started to burn without heat. A pale violet brush of light stands on every masthead, hissing faintly, and the men around you are not screaming. They are taking off their caps. What the glow actually is
St. Elmo's fire is a corona discharge. During a thunderstorm the atmosphere carries an enormous voltage difference, and that field concentrates around sharp, pointed conductors: mast tips, yardarm ends, lightning rods, the wingtips and nose cones of aircraft, once in a while the horns of cattle or a person's raised hand. When the field near a point grows strong enough to ionize the surrounding air, the gas begins to glow and the tip leaks charge in a steady, luminous discharge rather than a lightning strike. In our nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere that light comes out blue or violet, and the process often buzzes, crackles or hisses.
The observations run deep into the written record. Pliny the Elder described the lights settling on Roman spears and mastheads and noted that sailors welcomed a pair of them. Antonio Pigafetta, chronicling Magellan's circumnavigation in the 1520s, wrote of the fire appearing during storms and vanishing to the crew's great relief. Two flames were the best sign; the men called the pair Castor and Pollux, the twin protectors. A single flame, sometimes called Helena, was read as unlucky, an omen that the worst was still coming.
Why it felt like a message
There is a reason the fire reads as intention rather than weather. It arrives at the height of danger, when the ship is already fighting for its life, and it settles precisely on the highest, most sacred-seeming points of the vessel. It moves. It makes sound. It waits until you are frightened and then quietly appears, which is exactly the timing a mind under stress will file as meaningful. The link to St. Elmo was not gullibility so much as pattern-reading under duress, the same instinct that turns any loud coincidence into a sign.

The physics is settled and the history is well sourced, and still the accounts keep a residue the equations do not touch. Pilots have described the fire crawling across a cockpit windscreen in the seconds before the plane was struck. Climbers near the summit of a peak have felt their ice axes hum and their hair lift, the discharge starting on their own bodies.
