Swear It Happened — CASE FILE #278
73% BELIEVED
In the spring I pulled an old cast-iron radiator off the wall in the hallway to replace it, and taped to the back of it, folded small, yellowed, was a note. Someone had hidden it where only a person doing exactly what I was doing, tearing the house apart, would ever find it.
I unfolded it. The handwriting was shaky, old, pressed hard into the paper. It said: "If you are reading this, you have found my note, and I am glad, because it means you are fixing the house and you will find the rest. Do not sleep in the back bedroom. I am sorry. I could not sell it any other way. Ask the neighbours what happened there. God forgive me for not telling you to your face."
I sat on the floor of that hallway with the note in my hand and my stomach somewhere around my feet. The back bedroom. We had been using it for storage, thank God, boxes and paint cans, nobody sleeping in it yet. But we had planned to make it the nursery.
I did ask the neighbours. An older woman two doors down went quiet and then told me, carefully, that the family before the man who sold to us had left suddenly, in the night, years ago, and that there had been talk, and that no one who slept in that back room had ever stayed in the house long, and that she would not say more than that on her own doorstep.
We did not make it the nursery. We kept it as storage, door shut, and I never spent a night in it, and neither did anyone I love. The old man could not tell me to my face. But he told me. I think, in his way, he was trying to save someone the way no one had saved him.
