It behaves like a prank played by physics. During or after a thunderstorm, a luminous sphere — grapefruit to beach-ball sized, white, orange or blue — appears, drifts horizontally at walking pace, seems to EXPLORE (along wires, through open windows, famously down airplane aisles), and then vanishes: silently, or with a bang and a smell of sulphur. Reports run back centuries and include scientists; a fireball is said to have entered Tsar Nicholas II's chapel service, and one clipped a seminar room in front of physicists. Rough surveys suggest a surprising share of the population has seen SOMETHING like it once.

A phenomenon science believes but can't book

Ball lightning holds a peculiar status: mainstream physics broadly accepts it EXISTS — on the weight of testimony and one great piece of luck — while lacking an agreed mechanism. The luck: in 2012 Chinese researchers recording ordinary lightning with spectrographs accidentally captured a ball's spectrum, showing vaporized soil elements (silicon, iron, calcium) — supporting the theory that a strike vaporizes soil into burning silicon nanoparticle networks. Rival models involve microwave bubbles, plasma vortices, and — for a slice of reports — hallucinations induced by a close strike's magnetic pulse (lab-plausible: transcranial magnetic stimulation makes people see discs of light). None explains the full repertoire, especially the passage through window glass without damage, reported too often to shrug off.
