The falls are, in the plainest terms, an ancient sea slowly rusting as it meets the sky.
Stranger than the color is what lives in that dark water. Microbes down there survive with no light and almost no oxygen, running their metabolism on sulfur and iron compounds. Scientists studying the outflow found a microbial community that has been cycling chemicals in the dark for a very long time, which is why astrobiologists keep pointing at Blood Falls when they talk about what life might do beneath the ice of Europa or Mars.
How the plumbing was finally mapped
For a long time nobody could say where the brine came from or how it moved, because you cannot exactly dig into a glacier and look. In 2017 a team led by researchers using a technique called radio-echo sounding traced a network of liquid brine inside the glacier itself, showing that water can persist and flow within ice that sits far below freezing. The salt lowers the freezing point, and the freezing process releases a little heat, which keeps the whole system from locking solid. The waterfall is the visible end of a hidden circulatory system.
