Almost nobody is neutral about a mirror in a dark room. The folklore file is thick: mirrors covered in houses of mourning (lest the soul be caught, or something look back); mirrors as doors in traditions from Europe to China; the schoolyard summoning rituals (see Bloody Mary in the glossary) that are, structurally, dares aimed at glass. Even the confident report a specific reluctance: don't look at the mirror on the way back from the bathroom at 3 a.m. As instincts go, it is oddly well-aimed — because the laboratory found something living in exactly that setup.

The strange-face in the mirror

In 2010, psychologist Giovanni Caputo published a disarmingly simple experiment: sit in a dim room, stare at your own reflection for ten minutes. Most participants reported their face beginning to WARP — features melting, an "other" face emerging: a stranger, an old woman, an animal, something they declined to describe; many felt the reflection watching them with its own intent. The mechanism, as best understood: low light starves the fusiform face system; prolonged fixation triggers perceptual fading (Troxler effect) of stable features; and the face-processor, fed decaying data about the most face-shaped thing in the room, begins CONFABULATING — generating faces from noise, live. Your own reflection is the perfect victim because you monitor it closely and expect it to behave.

So the ancestors covering mirrors, and the child certain something was wrong in the glass, were running valid perception science. The residue our files keep anyway: reflections seen to LAG or act by daylight-adapted witnesses; two people reporting the same wrong thing in the same mirror; and the heirloom glass with a résumé (see haunted mirrors in the glossary). The illusion needs dim light, fixation and time. Some reports had none of the three.
