Psychometry: Reading Objects Like Diaries

The claim is domestic and enormous at once: objects RECORD. Hand a sensitive the pocket watch and they read its owner — health, temper, the day he died — like a diary written in touch. The word (coined 1842, "soul-measuring") powered a Victorian research fad, put "token objects" at the center of séance-era experiments, and survives in police-psychic lore: the detective sliding the victim's ring across the table. Its theoretical cousin is the stone tape idea — emotion imprinting on matter — applied at hand-scale.

The testing record

Controlled results are poor in a specific, instructive way. Given objects with no feedback, readers produce the usual cold-reading fog — and, tellingly, read PLANTED objects (the experimenter's own comb passed off as a victim's) with equal confidence: the narrative flows whether or not there is anything to read, which points the arrow at the reader, not the object. Documented "police psychic" successes largely dissolve into after-the-fact matching and shotgunned statements. What keeps the file open at all: the occasional sealed-condition hit in the old literature (readings of unlabelled museum artifacts matching provenance later established) and our own readers' domestic versions — the flea-market ring returned after a week of borrowed nightmares; the visitor who touched the heirloom and described its dead owner's kitchen; the child handed grandfather's medal, telling the story nobody had told her. Objects with résumés are our cursed-object category's daily bread; psychometry is its claimed reading method.

House rule for such cases: blind it — an object with NO visible story, a reader with NO briefing, statements written before checking. It is the easiest protocol on this site, which is exactly why surviving it means something.
