An estate-sale rocking chair rocks by itself — but only gently, only in the evenings, and only, we realised after months, at the exact pace of a heartbeat. A slow, resting, dying heartbeat.
She sat down opposite me and talked for ten minutes. I answered. She remembers what I said. I was four hundred miles away and I can prove it.
The forest road home has a hundred deer crossing signs. I have hit exactly zero deer in fifteen years. What stepped into my headlights that November night stood up on two legs and was too tall for the signs to warn me about.
The invitation's 'colour assignments' seemed whimsical until we cracked the code at the reception — guests had been colour-coded by income bracket, gold nearest the couple.
Laminated. Cable-tied to the pipe. Next to the stopcock instructions, in the same handwriting, like any other bit of household advice.
Grandma had a name and a ritual for the thing that sits on your chest at night. I laughed at her salt and her scissors. I am not laughing anymore. It found my room.
For three nights a tall figure in a wide-brimmed hat stood at the foot of my bed while I lay frozen. On the fourth night, my roommate described him before I said a word.
Fresh out of basic and stuck pulling gate guard on the loneliest post on base, I learned that the boring jobs are where you actually find out what you are made of. One frozen night, a stalled car, and a decision I still stand by.
I bought a jar of old buttons at a thrift store. A gold wedding band was mixed in. I can't get it off — it sized itself to my finger overnight — and I dream, now, of a marriage I never had.

She sits at the bottom, ears up, tail still, facing the fourth step. Every evening at six. She has done it for three years.
Every night at exactly 2:17, the same number called the roadside line and said nothing but wind and breathing. Then my supervisor pulled the account, and I wish she hadn't.
A routine gallbladder surgery went wrong and my heart quit on the table. I felt myself lifted out, and then every year of my life unfolded at once, and I was asked, kindly, what I had learned.
An inherited landscape hangs in my study. Its painted sky changes — clear when it's clear out, storming when it storms — and once, a small painted figure appeared on the road, walking toward the house.
The landlord keeps the drawings. Four tenants, twenty years, four sheets of paper, one man in a wide-brimmed hat.
The night my grandmother died two states away, her old cat sat facing the front door and cried until dawn. He had never done it before. He never did it again.
A picture flashed into my head of my sister's car spinning on wet road. I called her without knowing why. What she was about to do when the phone rang stops my breath even now.
