The Perfume in the Empty House

In one sentence: A family doing a final walkthrough of their late mother’s empty house is hit by something so familiar it stops them cold.

After my mother died we sold her house. On the final walkthrough, in the stripped and empty living room, the whole family stopped at once: her perfume, thick in the air, in a house with nothing left in it.

When my mother died, my siblings and I spent months clearing out her house to sell it. It was hard, slow, dusty work, and by the end the house was completely empty, every room stripped to bare walls and floors, nothing left, not a stick of furniture, not a curtain, not so much as a nail in the wall.

The day of the final walkthrough before handing over the keys, the three of us walked through together one last time. It was strange to see the rooms empty, echoing, smelling of nothing but dust and cleaning spray and the flat neutral smell an empty house has.

We came into the living room, the three of us together, and all three of us stopped at the same moment. Because the room was full of her perfume. Not a trace, not a hint. It was thick, present, unmistakable, the specific floral perfume she had worn every day of our lives, the one we had already given away with the last of her things weeks before. It was as if she had just walked through, as if she were standing right there.

None of us said anything for a moment. Then my sister said her name, quietly, and my brother, who does not believe in anything, had tears in his eyes. We stood in that empty room and breathed it in, all three of us, and it was not our imagination, because we all smelled it at once, in a bare empty room with no source for it anywhere. There were no bottles left. There was nothing in that house but us and the smell of our mother.

It faded after a minute or two, the way a person's perfume fades from a room after they leave it. We locked up and handed over the keys and none of us has ever doubted, since, that she was there to say goodbye to the house with us. My brother believes in things now. He does not talk about it, but he does.
