My Dog Came Back for One Night

Two weeks after we buried Rooster, I heard his tags jingle down the hall and felt him jump onto the foot of the bed, exactly the way he had for nine years.

Rooster was a stubborn old beagle who slept at the foot of our bed for nine years. He had a routine: three circles, a heavy sigh, then a thump against my feet that I could set a clock by. When his back legs gave out we made the hard choice, and my wife and I buried him under the maple in the yard.

The house went wrong-quiet after that. No claws on the kitchen tile, no jingle of the collar tags. I did not sleep well.

About two weeks later I woke because the mattress moved. Not a shift of my wife turning over — a specific dip at the foot of the bed, a weight settling in, the exact spot and the exact heaviness of a thirty-pound dog lying down. I lay perfectly still. Then I heard it: the soft metal jingle of tags, once, twice, as something scratched an ear and got comfortable.

I did not move for a long time. I was not scared. If anything I was afraid to breathe and break it. At some point I said his name out loud, very quietly, and the weight pressed down a little more, the way he used to lean into me when he wanted his head scratched.

In the morning the collar and tags, which we had hung on a hook by the back door, were on the floor at the foot of the bed. My wife had not moved them. She had heard the jingle too and thought she was dreaming.

We never felt him again after that night. I like to think he came back to check that we were all right, did three circles, and then finally let himself rest.
