The Feeling That Made Me Pull My Daughter Off the Ice

Swear It Happened — CASE FILE #254

I was watching from the bank, coffee in hand, perfectly relaxed. And then, for no reason I can point to, I was not relaxed. A certainty landed on me, cold and total, that I needed to get my daughter off the ice immediately. Not a worry. A command, from somewhere under my own thoughts.
I did not debate it. I called her name, sharp enough that she came right away, a little annoyed at being pulled from her friends. I walked her firmly back to the solid bank and did not let her argue. I could not have explained it to her. I could barely explain it to myself. Other parents glanced at me.
Maybe ninety seconds later there was a sound like a rifle shot, and the ice opened. A dark crack shot across the pond and a section gave way with a heavy slushing collapse, right in the middle, right where my daughter had been standing and sliding with the others. There was screaming, and a scramble to pull two kids out of the freezing water, both of whom, thank God, were okay, cold and terrified but okay.
I stood on the bank holding my daughter so hard she complained. I have thought about it every winter since. I do not know what told me. I only know it was right, and that if I had waited to feel foolish, I would not have.
